For many Long Islanders, the LIRR is the usual way into Manhattan, and for a regular 9-to-5 commute it’s hard to beat. But the train doesn’t suit every trip. It’s not ideal for a 6 a.m. client breakfast in Tribeca, three meetings in three neighborhoods, a late dinner in the West Village or a family with a stroller heading to a Broadway matinee. A private car service from Long Island to Manhattan is built for those trips. This guide covers typical travel times, how the cost compares with the train and when hourly service makes sense.
How long does it take from Long Island to Manhattan by car?

Common routes include the LIE and Queens-Midtown Tunnel for Midtown and the East Side, the Grand Central Parkway and RFK Bridge for the Upper East Side, and the Belt Parkway into Lower Manhattan. Your chauffeur picks the route based on live traffic and where you’re going.
Long Island to Manhattan car service rates
One-way trips are quoted as a flat rate. Multi-stop days are billed by the hour.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Nassau to Midtown, one way | Hourly as-directed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lincoln Continental | 1–3 | Flat rate on request | Quote on request |
| Mercedes S-Class | 1–3 | Flat rate on request | Quote on request |
| Cadillac Escalade / Chevy Suburban | 4–6 | Flat rate on request | Quote on request |
| Mercedes Sprinter | 7–14 | Flat rate on request | Quote on request |
When you compare costs, remember the extras of other options: a train ticket for each person, plus subway or taxi fares at each end, or tunnel tolls and all-day Manhattan parking if you drive. For a group of four sharing an SUV, the difference is often smaller than people expect, and you get a door-to-door ride with room for bags. Ask what’s included when you get a quote. See our Long Island limo service page for more.
When a car is better than the train
- Early or late trips. A 5:30 a.m. pickup or a 1 a.m. ride home is routine for a chauffeur, even when trains are infrequent.
- Several stops. A Midtown meeting, a Downtown lunch and a Chelsea gallery visit can be one hourly booking.
- Groups and families. Four or more people, a stroller, grandparents or a wheelchair user.
- Luggage. Anyone continuing to a hotel or an airport.
- Client meetings. You arrive on time and ready, not rushing up from the subway.
- Bad weather. Snow and heavy rain make station platforms the worst part of the trip.
The hourly as-directed day
This is the most useful option for Long Islanders doing business in the city. The chauffeur picks you up at home, stays with you through the day and drives you home. A typical 8-hour booking covers an early pickup, three or four meetings, lunch and a mid-afternoon departure before the evening rush. You can work in the back seat between stops. See our hourly chauffeur service.
Nights out: dinner, Broadway and concerts
Book a round trip with wait time and the same chauffeur takes you in, waits and brings you home. Popular trips include Broadway shows, Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, Rangers and Knicks games, and birthday dinners where nobody has to drive.
Regular commutes
If you go into the city two or three days a week, ask about a standing booking with the same pickup time and one monthly invoice. Our corporate limo service page explains how business accounts work.

Do you serve Brooklyn and Queens too?
Yes, including DUMBO, Williamsburg, Long Island City and Astoria.
Can I book a car for the same day?
Often, yes, for sedans and SUVs. Call us and we’ll check availability.
Do you also drive from Manhattan to Long Island?
Yes, with the same fleet. Manhattan customers book us for Jones Beach, North Shore weddings and Long Island wineries.
How do I get a price?
Send your pickup address, destination, date and number of passengers, and we’ll send you a flat-rate quote.
