For Long Islanders, Newark Liberty (EWR) is the airport that’s only about 50 miles away and yet can take two hours to reach. The drive crosses Queens and Staten Island (or Manhattan), then a bridge or tunnel into New Jersey, with tolls and the Belt Parkway along the way. But Newark is United’s hub, and it often has the nonstop you need to Europe, the West Coast or Asia at a fare that makes the trip worthwhile. This guide covers realistic drive times by time of day, how our flat-rate pricing works, when to leave, and when we’d suggest flying from JFK instead.
How long does it take from Long Island to Newark Airport?
These are typical door-to-curb estimates. Traffic, weather and events can change them, and your chauffeur plans the route on the day.
| From | Off-peak | Weekday rush (6–10 a.m. / 3–8 p.m.) |
|---|---|---|
| Great Neck / Manhasset | 60–75 min | 90–130 min |
| Garden City / Hicksville | 70–90 min | 100–150 min |
| Massapequa / Babylon | 75–95 min | 110–150 min |
| Huntington / Melville | 80–100 min | 120–160 min |
| Smithtown / Commack | 90–110 min | 130–170 min |
There are two main routes, and your chauffeur picks one based on live traffic:
- Southern route: Belt Parkway → Verrazzano Bridge → Staten Island Expressway → Goethals Bridge → NJ Turnpike. This is usually fastest outside rush hour.
- Northern route: LIE → Queens-Midtown Tunnel → Lincoln or Holland Tunnel → NJ Turnpike. It’s used when the Belt Parkway or the Verrazzano is jammed.
Long Island to Newark Airport rates
Either route includes several bridge and tunnel tolls, which is one reason a flat rate is easier than a metered or app ride. Vision Limo quotes one flat rate for your trip before you book. There’s no surge pricing and no meter running in traffic.

For a trip of several days, parking at Newark can add up quickly, so compare that cost with a round-trip car service. See our Newark Airport limo service page for a quote to your address.
When to leave Long Island for a Newark flight
A common rule of thumb is to arrive at the airport 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Then add the drive time from the table above. Here are some examples:
- 8:00 a.m. domestic from Hicksville: at EWR by 6:00 → pickup around 4:15 a.m., before the morning rush builds.
- 1:00 p.m. international from Garden City: at EWR by 10:00 → pickup around 8:00 a.m., with a rush-hour buffer.
- 6:00 p.m. domestic from Huntington: at EWR by 4:00 → pickup around 1:45 p.m., ahead of the evening rush.
- 10:00 p.m. international from Great Neck: at EWR by 7:00 → pickup around 4:45 p.m., during the evening rush.
We’ll suggest a pickup time when you book, based on your address, flight and the day of the week.
Newark Airport terminals
Newark has three passenger terminals: Terminal A (rebuilt and opened in 2023), Terminal B and Terminal C, which is United’s main hub. Airlines sometimes change terminals, so check the one on your booking or with your airline before you travel and give it to us with your flight number.
For departures, your chauffeur drops you at the departures curb for your terminal. For arrivals, we’ll confirm the pickup spot with you by phone or text once you land, because designated pickup areas can change.
Is it worth it, or should you fly from JFK?
Here’s our honest take as a company that drives to every airport in the area.
Fly from Newark when:
- The nonstop you want only runs from EWR, which happens with many United routes
- The fare difference is meaningful for your whole group
- You’re flying early in the morning or late in the evening, when the roads are clearer
Fly from JFK or LaGuardia when:
- The flight leaves at weekday rush hour and the fare difference is small
- You’re traveling with small children, because two-plus hours in traffic is hard on everyone
- Bad weather is forecast, since the bridges and tunnels to New Jersey are often the first to back up
Whichever airport you choose, our airport transfer service covers JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, MacArthur and private terminals like Teterboro.
